Prof. August Basil Temu

Widely acknowledged as an international expert in forestry. He started working as an educator at Sokoine Agricultural University (SUA) in 1973 (then under the University of Dar es Salaam), at the then Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Science). He served as the Dean of forestry until 1987 when he was engaged by FAO to assist in the development of forestry education at Chittagong University in Bangladesh (1987-1990 when he returned to SUA. From 1992 he was employed by The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) to develop and disseminate agroforestry education in Africa and globally. He established and managed the African Network for Agroforestry Education (ANAFE) as well as The Southeast Asian Network for Agroforestry Education (SEANAFE). During the period 2007 to 2014 he served as the Deputy Director General of ICRAF.  During his over 50 years of distinguished service as an academician, researcher and administrator he visited over 50 countries where he provided technical support for research and innovations in forestry and agroforestry. He has served on several boards in the areas of climate, agriculture, forestry and environment.

In year 2000, he was formally honored by being appointed as an international member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry (KSLA) a position that is permanent. Following his retirement from ICRAF in 2014, he is very active in providing education and advisory on matter of forestry, environment, energy and Agroforestry.  He served as Board Chair of the College of Forestry Wildlife and Tourism (2017-2025). Recently he has been working on matters of policy development and practice in Tanzania.  He Is active in supervising PhD students at Sokoine university of Agriculture.
